Yavapai County and the Bagdad area has a long and interesting history that dates back thousands of years. From early Native American foragers to prehistoric agriculturists, many Native American groups have called Yavapai County home over the millennia. The Yavapai, Hualapai, O’odham, and Hopi tribes still have connections to the land today, and their ancestral sites dot the landscape. Ranching and mining has also been an important part of the County’s history for centuries, and today the diverse remnants of old ranches and mines are abundant in the region. In many places, the long sequence of humanity’s occupation in the region is reflected in discrete sets of features preserved in layers or side by side on the landscape. This presentation provides a sample of recent historical and archaeological approaches to the layered archaeological and historical landscape in Yavapai County and Arizona as a whole, covering research themes, oral history, archaeological data recovery, mining camp life, and the value of engaging modern descendant communities in the study of our shared history.
